Exploring Dementia, Alzheimer’s, and Aging.

Writer: Dr. Isabelle AmiguesDr. Isabelle Amigues

Aging is an inevitable part of life, yet the way we experience it can vary dramatically. Dementia and Alzheimer's disease are conditions that affect millions, but they remain shrouded in mystery and, often, fear

In this blog, we highlight a podcast conversation where Dr. Amigues is joined by Dr. Danny Cabral, a double board-certified neurologist and psychiatrist who specializes in dementia care. Her insights shed light on the complexities of cognitive decline and the importance of a compassionate, multidisciplinary approach to care.

The Connection Between Neurology and Psychiatry

Historically, neurology and psychiatry were considered a single field. Over time, they diverged, with neurology focusing on the physical structure of the brain and psychiatry dealing with the mind’s emotional and behavioral aspects. Dr. Cabral saw the necessity of combining both disciplines to better serve dementia patients.

“In dementia care, the neurological aspect is crucial for diagnosing and understanding the disease’s progression, while psychiatry helps address the existential and emotional impact,” he said. “The interplay between these two fields allows for a more complete and compassionate approach.”

Innovations in Dementia Treatment

The field of dementia care is advancing rapidly. One of the most significant developments is the introduction of Alzheimer’s biomarker testing. Blood tests can now accurately detect Alzheimer’s in symptomatic individuals, opening the door to earlier intervention. Additionally, two disease-modifying therapies—anti-amyloid monoclonal antibodies—have been approved. These treatments, administered through IV infusions, slow cognitive and functional decline in the early stages of Alzheimer’s.

While these medical advancements are promising, it emphasizes that dementia care isn’t just about medication. Simple interventions such as music therapy, pet therapy, and even hand massages can significantly improve the quality of life for patients. “We often see dementia patients being given antipsychotics and other heavy medications when they become agitated,” he said. “But sometimes, all they need is a soothing touch or a familiar melody to calm them.”

Reimagining Aging and Dementia Care

In many cultures, older adults are isolated in retirement communities, removed from younger generations. This lack of intergenerational connection can accelerate cognitive decline and lead to loneliness.

Integrating seniors into everyday life is essential. “We need to move away from the idea that aging means withdrawing from society. When older adults remain engaged traveling, pursuing hobbies, interacting with younger generations their cognitive health benefits.

Pointed to studies showing that seniors who maintain social connections and a sense of purpose experience slower cognitive decline. Programs that bring together young children and the elderly, such as intergenerational daycare centers, have shown remarkable benefits for both groups.

Dementia is a complex condition, but with the right approach, those affected can still lead meaningful lives.

As our population ages, we must rethink how we support those with dementia and their families. Whether through medical advancements, psychological support, or societal change, there is hope for a future where aging is embraced rather than feared.
